Ambitious Girls Fund!
Support a
Nepalese girl's college education!
Why do these
girls need our help?
The Dalit are Nepal’s ‘untouchable’ oppressed caste.
Despite laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of caste, daily life
for Dalits still brings many hardships including lack of access to proper
healthcare, education and jobs. Dalit families are expected to serve higher
caste families without proper pay and can hardly provide for themselves.
Girls and women are also experience gender discrimination and many poor
families opt not to educate their daughters who have to work instead.
How are the
students selected?
The students are selected by ADWAN (EDWON in Nepali) staff and board members
in Nepal based on the following criteria:
• The students are members of a local ADWAN women’s group.
• Priority is given to students with high scores on the college
qualifying exam.
• Priority is given according to the greatest financial need and
to students of the most disadvantaged castes within the over eighty Dalit
sub-castes.
• We only accept as many students as we can fund (currently four).
What do the
‘Ambitious Girls’ study and how long does their progam last?
• Priority will be given to students studying health care and medicine,
education, social work, forestry, agriculture, computer science, law and
journalism – fields that will particularly benefit the Dalit community.
• Most programs take two years to complete. Nursing degrees take
three years. The average yearly cost per student is $600-700 (incl. 15%
administrative fee).
How long is
my commitment?
Your commitment lasts for as long as you wish to be a donor to the scholarship
fund.
What is my
cost?
We simply invite you to donate according to what makes most sense to you.
You can make a one-time donation or donate throughout the year, as you
wish. Annual pledges are welcome! Our edwon.org website offers you the
option of paying via paypal.
How is my
contribution spent?
The money is administered by ADWAN staff in Nepal and pays directly for
tuition, housing, uniforms, and books. Only 15% of donations are used
to cover administrative costs within Nepal. Our ADWAN staff members are
themselves Dalit.
How will I
stay informed about the students’ progress?
The students will submit regular reports of their progress to ADWAN staff
who will compile and forward reports to EDWON (US). We will pass on all
relevant news and pictures to you.
