SOCIAL CHANGE
Caste
Sarita and Sanani are from different castes. Before their
women’s group brought them together, the caste difference prevented any
interaction. Now they are friends and share water from the same jug. Sarita
and Sanani have discovered the power of solidarity.
Domestic Violence
58% of women in rural Nepal report daily incidences of
violence. By bringing women independent sources of income, the savings
groups have led to greater respect from husbands and lessened domestic
violence. Now, when violence does occur, the women can act together, sometimes
putting offenders behind bars.
Community Development
The women’s groups are creating a new can-do attitude.
Women are spearheading a variety of improvements in their communities
and have become a powerful force for change.
Education
Women participating in the groups
understand the power of literacy and education in their own lives and
encourage all children to attend school.
