THE FOUNDER

Bishnu Maya Pariyar, herself of low-caste, grew up in a remote village
in a family of subsistence farmers. Her mother and older sister are illiterate.
Surmounting enormous obstacles, including gender and caste discrimination,
Pariyar completed an education as a social worker.
In 1996, at age 20, she founded Association for Dalit
Women’s Advancement of Nepal (ADWAN). Since then, Pariyar has traveled
to the United States for further study, but plans to return permanently
to Nepal. An American sister organization, Empower Dalit Women of Nepal
(EDWON) supports Pariyar's work in Nepal.
